This page is for our guests arriving in Medan, if you are travelling with us we recommend printing this page and keeping it with you.
If you have the Boraspati package you will be met at Medan airport, and transported to either to the domestic flight to your charter or your Medan hotel if you’re staying the night. Your boards will be sent overland to Sibolga or Sinabang via hired van or charter flight, please have items you might need in Medan separate from your boardbag. In the event of airline delays, Boraspati will be able to collect your bags and organise all your domestic travel arrangements.
When you get off the plane, go to the Visa on Arrival counter before going through passport control, pay your money, then go to the counter adjacent on the left to get your passport stamp. You’ll need 25 USD in cash for the visa on arrival, please ensure you are eligible (US and Australian citizens are), check this page for details. Getting through customs in Medan can be slow. Being patient and having your documentation handy for checks will make your experience easier.
When in the luggage hall to get your bags, do not accept any offers of assistance from anyone. If you have booked Boraspati transfers to your charter, staff should be waiting outside the luggage hall in front of the main exit. Boraspati staff will easily recognise you with your boardbag, and will find you in the airport if you get delayed for any reason. Call your skipper at the numbers below if you have any problems.
The best way to get local currency is the ATM at the airport straight outside the main exit on the left (if you have a card that has the Cirrus or PLUS logos, and almost all do, or a Mastercard or Visa it will work). 1 USD roughly equals 9700 rupiah, or 100 000 rupiah equals about 10.25 USD. You won’t need that much local money as there is nowhere to spend it on the boat, but it is handy to have for Medan departure tax (Rp 75,000), leaving tips for the boat staff, some lunch massage, beer on Monday of arrival, etc. We recommend getting a couple of million when you arrive and then you have options. You can always change it back at the end if you don’t use it, but you never know when it might come in handy.
If you are asked to indicate an address in Indonesia, use your hotel name or have the details below for Boraspati handy, and contact Tom at Boraspati for any travel advice on your time in Indonesia.
Once you arrive in Sinabang/Sibolga on the Monday of departure you will be met by our representative and transferred to a hotel where you can use the facilities, get lunch, get a massage or swim, or take a wander around. Later that afternoon you will be met by your skipper to finalise the paperwork, and transported to the boat to start your journey, leaving port Monday evening.
Skippers Mick (Seriti +6281397076554) and Nico (The Dream +6281388046085) will be with the boat – you can contact them at any time in the three days before departure if you have any issues or questions.
After arriving back to port on Friday morning, guests with the Boraspati package will be transferred to Sinabang or Sibolga airport, and surfboards sent separately to Medan, where they will be held by Boraspati and delivered to the international airport for your departing flight. We recommend departing on the day after return, if you’re on a Friday night flight Boraspati can look after your luggage while you explore the Medan city centre.
There is no cellphone coverage in most places in the Banyaks, but in case of emergency the satellite phone number for the Seriti is +881631636278 – if anyone at home needs to reach you urgently they can send a free message via http://messaging.iridium.com/ or call that number (expensive). The satellite number for The Dream is +870776477046. If you need to get a local SIM card, the Telkomsel network has intermittent coverage at Bay of Plenty, or use your phone’s roaming.
